How would you describe the claim and purpose of GBD in one sentence?
Making a contribution to quality assurance in laboratory diagnostics with expertise, passion and scientific commitment.
What do you like most about your work in the GBD?
It's the wide variety of activities.
Several times a year, we plan panels for quality control samples for 80 parameters for virology alone. Although this is routine, we are always thinking and planning in new ways.
It is the exchange with scientific colleagues, such as the EQA scheme managers, with whom we exchange information on current epidemiological developments.
We produce something that helps other people: our quality control samples for internal and external quality control. They improve diagnostics and ultimately help us all as patients.
The combination of these 3 things is special and enriching.
Could you please share one professional success in 2024 with us?
I would like the GBD to continue working on digital PCR and, in this context, on the production of standards and reference materials.
We have set ourselves the goal of expanding our portfolio for internal control samples. We have been able to strengthen our partnerships in this area, but also produce great new multiplex quality control samples that are ideal for validating tests or checking test systems. These include our gastrointestinal multiplex panels and the brand new ones for respiratory pathogens.

What is so special about these products?
The sample contains several pathogens, e.g.one ouf our gastro mulitplex samples - it contains 5 different pathogens: Norovirus GGI +GGII, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus
Sapovirus.
This is cost effective and increases the accuracy of data analysis for our clients in the lab.
Our samples consist of biological materials - no synthetic DNA fragements, so it is as close as possible to a ‘real sample’.
Our quality controls can be used independently of the manufacturer with various tests.
